When designing a baby nursery one of the favorite things for new parents to select is a crib bedding set. However, a fully coordinated crib bedding set is actually something that parents may be better off skipping on their new baby checklist.  In fact, baby items such as a heavy crib quilt, padded crib bumper and crib pillows can pose a threat to your baby.

Crib pillows, crib quilts and padded —pillow like bumpers can become a dangerous suffocation risk to your new baby. These items do not afford a safe sleep environment for infants.

    So,What Belongs in a Crib?

Ideally, besides the baby— a fully stocked crib should only contain the following:

    1. The Best New Mattress That You Can afford.
    2. A Fitted Mattress Pad Protector or Waterproof Sheeting
    3. A Snug Fitted Bottom Crib Sheet

Won’t My Baby Get Cold Without a Blanket or Comforter?

You can keep your baby warm and comfortable by using a sleep sack. Sleep sacks have been recommended by many pediatricians and safe infant sleep advocates.  We recommend the HALO sleep sack.  Remember that an infant should not be dressed to warmly or otherwise caused to be overheated by heavy blankets. Overheating is a risk factor for SIDS.

What If My Baby Bumps His Head On The Crib?

While it is possible for you baby to bump his head against the crib railing, it is not likely that he will be seriously harmed. The greater danger is posed by suffocation should he become entrapped between the bump and the mattress or by having his airways pressed into the bumper as he attempts to nestle during sleep.  Also, there have been cases of babies being strangled by bumper ties that were too long.

If you must have a crib bumper an alternative to traditional crib bumpers are the Breathable Baby Bumpers.

     Rethinking Nursery Design

If you already have a crib set or just can’t resist purchasing an ensemble—consider these alternative uses for the pieces when designing your nursery:

    • Hang a Crib Quilt As a Piece Of Artwork in The Nursery
    • Use Crib Pillows as Accent Pieces on a Rocking Chair
    • Use The Crib Bumper As A Wall Border
    • Or Consider Creating Decorative Room Pillows From the Bumper

Many baby bedding companies sell other accessories beyond the standard crib set. Instead of purchasing bumpers, quilts and pillows you can add the design elements of a particular set by :

    • Ordering The Matching Dust Ruffle, Diaper Stacker And Coordinated Sheets
    • Purchasing Extra Fabric For Curtains, Rocking Chair Covers or Custom Changing Table Cover.
    • Finding Matching Wall Coverings, Lamps, Rugs and Other Set Accessories

    Focus On Safety

Some think that these new bedding cautions are too harsh. They say that many parents have used crib bumpers for their babies without any safety incidents.

While this is largely true, the focus of a great nursery should be on safety and not interior design. Just because you place your baby in a car seat doesn’t mean that you anticipate an accident in your travels. Yet, you understand that transportation involves risks and a car seat is a way to minimize the dangers.

Thing about the crib environment the same way. Keep it clear of toys, clothing, quilts, blankets and traditional bumpers and you will have provided your baby with a safe place to have the sweetest of dreams.
