• Essential Newborn Baby Clothing List

Our recommended newborn baby clothing list is based on the weight of a typical newborn baby. Most infants weigh on average 7 1/2 pounds at birth. Here are some suggestions for baby’s first wardrobe needs:

    • 4-6 Sleeping Cotton Sleeping Gowns (0- 3 Month)
    • 6-8 Bodysuits (0-3 Month)
    • 3 Pairs of Infant Mittens
    • 3 Beanies or Soft Cotton Hats
    • 6 Pairs of Socks (0-3 month)
    • 1-2 Sweaters (0-3 months)
    • 2-3 Footsies/Sleepers (Newborn)
    • 3-4  Footies /Sleepers (0 -3 Month)
    • 1 Home From The Hospital Outfit (Newborn)
    • 2 -3 Pull on Pants or Leggings (Newborn)
    • 2-3 Pull on Pants or Leggings (0-3 Months)

    • Cloth Diapers for emergencies
    • 1-2 Wearable Blankets

It is important to take into consideration the time of year that your infant will be born. A baby born in summer will not need many long-sleeved outfits. And, the opposite of this will hold true with short-sleeves for a winter baby.

Another consideration is how often you plan to do laundry for your new baby. You can likely get by with less newborn outfits if you plan to do laundry frequently — at least twice a week for baby. However, the first weeks are exhausting and laundry is often a low priority. So, most new parents find a ready assortment of clean newborn essential clothing a must.

Newborns can change outfits between 2-3 times a day. Sometimes a wardrobe change is necessary due to soiling diaper mishaps or spit-up occurrences. In other instances, you may be dressing your new baby for a special outing or a welcome visit. In general as newborns spend most of their new life sleeping they should be dressed in soft, comfortable clothing that is not restricting. Your baby’s wardrobe should also be one that easily allows for frequent diaper changes and does not interfere with the healing of the belly button.
